On April 19th 1949, THE ROYAL NAVY FRIGATE HMS AMETHYST LEFT SHANGHAI FOR PASSAGE UP THE YANGTSE RIVER TO NANKING. CHINA WAS THEN IN A STATE OF CIVIL WAS AND AMETHYST WAS TAKING ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES TO THE BRITISH EMBASSY. SHE WAS ON A LAWFUL AND PEACEFUL MISSION. EN ROUTE, THE FRIGATE CAME UNDER INTENSE FIRE FROM COMMUNIST SHORE BATTERIES. TWENTY TWO BRITISH SAILORS WERE KILLED, THE SHIP’S BRIDGE WAS DESTROYED AND THE AMETHYST RAN AGROUND STRANDING THE SURVIVORS. AFTER RESCUE ATTEMPTS BY HMS CONSORT, LONDON AND BLACK SWAN ALL FAILED, THE SHIP’S COMMANDER DECIDED THERE WAS ONLY ONE COURSE OF ACTION LEFT OPEN – TO RUN A 140 MILE GAUNTLET OF COMMUNIST ARTILLERY, SHORE BATTERIES AND FORTS IN A DARING BID FOR FREEDOM… THIS EXCITING FILM ACCOUNT OF THE HISTORIC INCIDENT WAS SHOT WITH ALL POSSIBLE ACCURACY IN AND ON BOARD HMS AMETHYST HERSELF, THE FRIGATE HAVING BEEN RESCUED FROM THE BREAKERS’S YARD BY THE FILM COMPANY ESPECIALLY FOR THE PRODUCTION. COMMANDER J.S. KERANS D.S.O, R.N. – THE COMMANDER OF THE AMETHYST DURING ITS DARING ESCAPE BID – ALSO ACTED AS TECHNICAL ADVISOR TO THE PRODUCTION AND THE ADMIRALTY, WAR OFFICE AND AIR MINISTRY PARTICIPATED FULLY TO ENSURE EXCEPTIONAL AUTHENTICITY.
